Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1861 Confederate States Restrike BR-8002 ANACS AU-55
Lot Number: 782
Description: Breen-8002, Scott & Co. Restrike. The reverse was filed off of genuine 1861-dated half-dollars in order to provide the necessary stock to create the CSA restrikes, which are the most obtainable, tangible artifacts available of a Confederate half-dollar. The actual Confederate reverse die was used in 1879 for overstriking the blanked reverses, and it displays seven stars on the shield, representative of the original seceding states. Details are always unevenly represented for the restrikes because they were produced on a screw press on undersized planchets, and under decreased pressure in order to tax the rickety, old dies as little as possible. Nevertheless, traces of luster remain visible for this delightful example.
