Lot Title: 1822 ICG MS-63, as described
Lot Number: 719
Description: J.R. Collection. Between them, the PCGS and NGC population reports have a total of about fourteen mint-state grading events for the 1822 dime, and without question, that figure includes duplicate submissions. This date has long been considered "the stopper" within the Capped Bust date series, and specialists believe that the true number of mint-state survivors does not exceed ten pieces. Any collector fortunate enough to find an 1822 at all is confronted with the discouraging fact that it's going to almost certainly be in low grade, perhaps Good to VG at best. Thus ANY example showing mint-state definition has to be considered a major opportunity.

We precede introduction of the present ICG MS-63 example because, in the cataloger's opinion, the coin truly does possess full mint-state details, struck on par with any of the known (and famous) mint-state examples. Each of the curls displays careful delineation, and the eagle's talons offer discernible separation between the segments, albeit with the modest softness always seen. Furthermore, the surface appears remarkably unblemished, free from nicks or bruises of any mentionable nature. All of that being said, visually, this dime looks noticeably subdued to the point of having no luster to speak of. High magnification reveals that the surfaces possess microgranular texture, almost as if it had been exposed to saltwater for a spell, resulting in the loss of flowline texture. Nevertheless, the toning which frames each side enhances the appeal - an aesthetic bonus given the amount of appeal that any 1822 dime with mint-state details will hold for the collector. Our grade: UNC/improperly altered surface.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
