Lot Title: 1880-CC GSA NGC MS-67
Lot Number: 452
Description: VAM-3. 3 graded MS-67 in original GSA holder, zero higher at NGC. Between them, NGC and PCGS have graded an astonishing 60 examples of 1880-CC as MS-67 (and two additional MS-67+ coins at PCGS), but that is a much different animal from what is now an extreme rarity. This "superb gem" dollar remains intact within its original GSA holder, and is one of only three superb GSA examples. A century ago, the 1880-CC was already a notable rarity, but the dispersal of the GSA hoards, as well as prior releases of bags from the Treasury, ballooned the population. Subsequently, most were removed from their original GSA slabs, depleting the population of high-grade examples to the paltry supply in existence today.

This Carson City possesses and incredibly clean cheek, showing just microscopic texture breaks due to lightest possible contact. The rear of the Liberty cap displays a handful of minute shiny abrasions. Upon close examination, a dozen or so brief, thin parallel striations over the ear, left over by a not-quite-perfect strike, yet both sides still manage to produce exceptionally dense, frothy ice-white sheen. The VAM attribution usually begins by noting a tiny dash beneath the second "8", and die chips at the top inside loop of the Cs in the mintmark. Another evident pickup point not mentioned in the VAM reference is some breakage at the upper left of "O" beneath the mintmark.
