The Jewel Consignment. Mintage: 1460. 14 graded AU-58, 4 higher at NGC. Even on the cusp of mint-state levels, the 1856-D is relegated to an extremely limited population, which itself must assuredly be inflated by multiple resubmissions. Anyone would be delighted to upgrade this issue from AU-58 to MS-anything given its rarity, stemming first from the paltry mintage, and second from a poor survival rate. As with all known genuine examples, "U" in UNITED barely shows at all, but the balance of details received surprisingly decent definition overall, including the individual grapes that cluster at the top of the wreath. For that matter "5" seems to always be shallow as well, but by comparison to other examples, this particular 1856-D does appear to be slightly better defined than usual for both of these touchpoints. Further, either side serves up a healthy portion of beautiful, medium sandy-gold luster that would look right at home on a far more common Philadelphia example.
