Lot Title: 1859 PCGS PR-64
Lot Number: 638
Description: The Mastodon Collection. Only the 1858 and 1859 are approachable by most collectors as proof half-dime types of the 1850s, as they were finally being struck in quantity enough to satisfy collector demand. The deep smoke-grey patina that endows this example makes it a bit more challenging to appreciate the strike and surface quality, but that original characteristic is also part of the charm of owning such an example. Nevertheless, after one puts stronger magnification on this coin, the details engraved by Anthony C. Paquet truly jump to life. Even the hair-thin lines in Liberty's sandal were struck up by the die. Rotated about 30 degrees on the reverse.
