Description: Sheldon-3. When it comes to acquiring any of the cents dated 1793, the odds of obtaining an example showing no environmental issues at all are very low. They just don't practically exist, except at an exceptionally pricey level, typically beyond what most collector can (or are willing to) afford. It is virtually a given that compromises must be made, and certain "challenges" accepted unless the buyer just happens to have an extraordinary budget. Faced with this scenario, the best that most can aspire to is a coin with "issues", that yet manages to retain to some level of visual eye-appeal. In short, "let's avoid an eyesore whenever possible." Fortunate is the collector who chooses to lean on this ruggedly handsome S-3. For all its shortcomings, tersely alluded to on the PCGS holder as "environmental damage", "handsome" seems an apt description, and not a commercializing stretch of reality. Aside from exquisitely even matte texture, superb leather-brown patina, a bit on the darker side for an original coin, helps downplay the surface roughness on account of low contrast presentation. From a sharpness standpoint, the date is fully formed and stands well away from the rim, allowing excellent legibility. LIBERTY merges just slightly at the tops of LIB, and OF AMERI also blend a bit into the rim. A tiny dimple just above the point of the bottom of the bust appears to be the only abrasion worthy of special note.
