Lot Title: 1911-D Strong D NGC MS-62
Lot Number: 170
Description: Bert Davies Collection. In spite of its vaunted (and well-deserved) status as the key to the Indian quarter-eagle series, the 1911-D actually can routinely be found in lower grades, especially within the AU levels. Yet truly nice mint-state examples are not so easy to locate. To compound matters, Indian gold of all denominations has been heavily counterfeited over the years, making it mandatory to have any potential 1911-D target at least authenticated, if not graded, especially within the mint-state stratum. Thanks to NGC's encapsulation of this undeniably appealing example, both queries have been professionally and ideally addressed. Reviewing each side shows no distractions, no problems, no copper spots nor any other issues to detract, except for a bit of weakness of luster which probably denies a fully "choice" assessment. That being said, as everyone knows, the 1911-D frequently will be found with a weak or even non-existent mintmark. Thus, the denotation of a "strong D" serves to amplify the value here. Indeed, a quick glance with a loupe reveals reasonable sharpness for the mintmark, including both inner and outer silhouettes, albeit with relief that is typically flat even for the best 1911-D specimens. Indeed, it can be readily seen without magnification. The high, raised wire rim on the obverse not only speaks to a very good strike but also serves as an authentication mechanism for nearly all known genuine examples.
