Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1849 NGC AU-58
Lot Number: 153
Description: The Isallobar Collection. Mintage: 23,294. 43 graded AU-58, 20 higher at NGC. Cargo, especially of high value (such as gold bullion) took a long time to travel from west to east with the nation's fledgling infrastructure, so forty-niner treasure had not made its way to Philadelphia in enough volume to boost mintages by 1849. The quarter-eagle doesn't often ring a bell as an elusive emission, but NGC's population report verifies this as a fact. This particular specimen can hardly be distinguished from a "select brilliant uncircualated" example since the wear is so very light, amounting to trivial friction over the inner luster of the fields. An unblemished example with virtually as-struck definition.
