Lot Number: 69
Description: Barry Hopper Collection. The 100th anniversary of the storming of the Bastille was celebrated in Paris, France during the world's fair, which opened on May 6th and lasted until October 31st. The event is, of course, symbolic as the beginning of the French Revolution and the fair featured a recreation of the Bastille as a centerpiece of the celebration. Undoubtedly, the most famous symbol of the world's fair was the Eiffel Tower, which served as the official entrance to the fairground as is depicted at the bottom of the medal's obverse. Also prominently featured in the lower background of the medal is a rendition of the "Great Model of the Earth". The majority of the obverse features a rendition of a female maiden "Pax", facing left with a laurel wreath in her outstretched hand, crowning a bare-chested man, and they are suspended over the date "1889". EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE arcs above the figures. Featured on the reverse is a figure blowing a horn with REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE to the left, and "W.A. WOOD" below the figure.
