Description: M. Diatom Collection. There was a time when the mantra of "brilliant is best" dominated the coin collecting landscape, and this 1896-S likely experienced the tribulations of that philosophy, showing the brightening effects of a baking soda cleaning. PCGS denotes that with a simple "cleaned" disclaimer. That being said, many such coins recover admirably if left in an album to recollect some original patina, and that should be the ideal destination for this surprisingly frosty and not-at-all bad-looking example. Typically struck with some softness at the centers, there is a fair number of linear roller marks over the ear, and even a few passing over the eagle's lower breast area.
