Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1867 PCGS AU-53
Lot Number: 161
Description: Joanna H. Fogle Collection. 8 graded AU-53, 13 higher at PCGS. The 1867 is one of the Reconstruction period fives that has a notorious reputation for poor survival, as not even a handful have been allocated mint-state status between both grading services. The "about uncirculated" range is just about the best one can reasonably hope for toward completion of a full date set. Some limited mint luster percolates between the obverse stars, and the reverse retains hints of flashy texture in the fields, but overall, there is definitely some wear apparent on either side, affecting only the very finest details. All the major devices remain sharp, except perhaps the eagle's talons and the feathers of the arrows.
