Description: FS-501. 2 graded MS-65 FB, 2 higher at PCGS. Usage of the so-called "large S" is the only such instance known within the Mercury dime series, presumably created when a mint worker couldn't find his dime punch and resorted to one reserved for another series. Estimates suggest that fewer than one in five 1928-S dimes use this mintmark, and the population report obviously underscores extreme rarity at the Gem level. Modestly brilliant, the present specimen offers a flourish of very attractive teal color above Liberty's head, but meticulous bidders will also note a brief staple scratch centered between "BE" that may have escaped both PCGS and CAC in terms of grade.
