Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1880 NGC MS-68
Lot Number: 132
Description: Mintage: 1,600. 23 graded MS-68 (3 are stars), 1 higher at NGC. PCGS claims two examples that exceed the present, including MS-68+ and an inconceivable MS-69. The exalted grade of MS-68 immediately commands attention for any classic series, although it should be noted that the later date gold dollars were struck with meticulous attention to quality, and an incomparable number were saved for posterity. Nevertheless. Really? MS-68?! There are simply no post-production flaws to be found on either side -- none. And that minute tick seen in the obverse left field is actually as-struck, being an exceedingly tiny planchet defect that will serve as a pedigree marker for future collectors. Deep, rich golden hue seems fully original and gets splashed with russet-gold zest that only serves to enhance the three-dimensional eye-appeal. An astounding, pristine type coin that demands a special place within a specialized type collection.
