Lot Title: 1853 PCGS MS-66
Lot Number: 127
Description: 57 graded MS-66, 20 higher at PCGS. That the 1853 gold dollar is far and away the most populous entrant at essentially all grades doesn't speak fairly of it's elusiveness above the "Gem" level. PCGS and NGC both report similar population statistics that speak to the paucity of truly superb survivors. This MS-66 example straddles the "sweet spot" for high-end type collectors as it incorporates a superb obverse, implying precisely one soft point of contact on the cheek, with a reverse that has been affected only by mild luster grazes. Nearly stunning granite texture positively beams with carrot-gold color interlaced with delightful lime-green nuances. Add to this a strike of impeccable sharpness, including four strong digits in the date, and one has a type coin to be coveted without the requirement of further justification.
