Description: Extensive almond-gold occupies virtually the entire surface, brightened up by the potent underlying silvery brilliance. 1917-S with either mintmark (obverse or reverse) usually shows up with shallow detail, and evidence of a strong die clash may explain why the dies had to be refinished so often (thus reducing the die's capacity to produce strong relief). A relatively unmarked example, some hairlines and vague abrasions stray into the obverse right field, and into the small field area left of the eagle's beak.
