Lot Title: 1879 PCGS MS-66
Lot Number: 818
Description: The Quantum Collection. Mintage: 13,700. 34 graded MS-66, 29 higher at PCGS. 1879 marked the beginning of paltry mintages in Philadelphia, although the limited use of the dies resulted in dazzling coins; the date is known for numerous fully prooflike examples, this being no such coin. Indeed, many astute collectors, realizing how common the cameo circulation strike coins are, choose instead to pursue one with this type of non-mirrored finish. But aside from all that, what elevates the breathtaking visual appeal is the presence of huge, wide wintergreen and lavender tone on the obverse, missing only the periphery, where chartreuse brilliance takes over. The reverse has an electric-magenta and peach-gold central portion surrounded by shimmering bands of cobalt-jade, Persian-blue and emerald bands, obviously placed there by long album storage.
