Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1858 PCGS PR-63
Lot Number: 757
Description: Mintage: 300, although some sources state that only about 80 of that figure were actually delivered, which would seem more consistent with the practical elusiveness of antebellum proof coinage. 1858 was the first year of proof sales to the public, and correctly assessing the strike format is crucial to ensuring that the collector today is obtaining a true proof format striking, since very good early circulation strikes can be almost indistinguishable from proofs. To that point, the cataloger could not locate the brief die scratch which should project left and upward from "M" in AMERICA, but the medium date does slope gently downward, and a tiny die defect rests on the ball of the "5", affirming the correct obverse proof die. Both sides also possess a wired rim edge, which should portend of an exceedingly powerful strike, with the rest of the coin also flawlessly detailed.
