Description: Shawl Consignment. 3 graded MS-63, 17 higher at NGC. A terribly limited supply of choice 1898-S half-dollars exists, and surely there cannot be many remaining in their original, previous-generation slabs. A memorable example appears here, as the surface has become utterly draped in unconventional brassy beige toning that provides a definite metallic aura. The release of old-time collections of Barber half-dollars has brought some semi-prooflike examples to the market, and this one hands-down has undeniable cameo contrast and mirrored fields that might earn special designation were the patina less prominent. An unlikely candidate for upgrade, a series of reed marks pepper the cheek, and minor strike weakness shows on the reverse.
