Lot Title: 1896-O PCGS MS-63 (rattler) CACCAC
Lot Number: 884
Description: Shawl Consignment. 5 graded MS-63, 15 higher at PCGS. A mere glance at the PCGS census affirms what every aficionado of the series already knows: 1896-O is frankly rare in choice mint-state grades or better, and almost certainly ranks as a top three key to a complete set. Moderate softness seen at several stars, namely S1, S3, S10, S11 and S12 is consistent with that seen for virtually every known example, and on the reverse, the eagle's neck and the juncture of his right (observed) wing display substantial lack of sharpness.

That being said, and at the risk of offending collectors who would never remove a coin from a rattler slab, this example should be considered for resubmission because it possesses one astonishing attribute not seen for most others. It is fully prooflike. This is the kind of presentation that should earn a "star" at one particular grading service, or could earn a "PL" designation at either. During the time this coin was placed in the rattler holder, the "PL" designation would not have been available from PCGS for the Barber half-dollar series. Furthering the near-sensational eye-appeal, the surfaces display gorgeous, flashy aluminum-white nuances and a healthy portion of white vibrancy. Truly a magnificent coin, and one that earns the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice Award outright.
