Lot Title: 1867 Rays NGC MS-65 (no line) CACCAC
Lot Number: 583
Description: 52 graded MS-65, 13 higher at NGC. The more difficult sub-type for 1867, the mint quickly discovered that the "rays" between the stars on the reverse only contributed to die wear and they were removed for all subsequent production. At hand is a sensational gem example, rock-solid in its stable, calm slate-grey exterior and comfortably detailed with precise lines in the shield, and nearly full stars on the reverse. Especially strong die-polish explains the lack of inherent luster -- coins struck off these dies were never going to be flashy. A legitimate contender for upgrade, the surface displays zero distractions, and absolutely no detectable marks on the obverse.
