Lot Title: 1795 13 Leaves Below Eagle PCGS AU-55+
Lot Number: 248
Description: Andy Alderson Collection. Bass-Dannreuther-4, R.5 might best be attributed from the reverse, where a noticeable die lump shows as raised metal between OF A, and it is considered a legitimately rare die-marriage. BD-4 falls within the Redbook "13 leaves" subtype. PCGS shows a population of 37 in AU-55, 1 in AU-55+ (this example), and 70 higher - almost assuredly with that number inflated by attempts to get a population cluster of twenty-eight AU-58 examples into higher certified grades. That this is the singular AU-55+ example has some significance since this specimen is brand new to the population report, having been a cornerstone of a private collection for the last thirty-plus years. It entered into our consignor's collection long before third-party grading became popular and has never been offered certified prior to today's sale, thus making it a truly "fresh" coin to the market. It is our pleasure to make it once again available to astute collectors.

When a coin has been off the market for a sizable length of time, it may be prudent to locate some identifying pedigree markers for future collectors. Turning to the reverse, a gentle rim bump may be noted above "I T" at 7:00 of the reverse, although this is a singular anomaly since the rims are free from any other intrusion on either edge. The golden cast that sweeps both sides pretty much falls within ideal norms, showing very modest glossy texture in the wide expanses of the fields, but also distinguishable flowline luster within the spaces between the stars. For collectors who fear the presence of adjustment marks, we are happy to announce that only extremely brief incursions will be found on the reverse rim at 2:00. Turning back to the obverse, a typical oblong contact mark floats well toward the top of the left field, and another pings Liberty's jaw line, while none are individually mentionable on the reverse.

Inevitably for a vintage gold coin that has seen some handing, there is evidence of utterly minor hairlines here and there, but they offer zero distraction. Typical strike definition for the type includes full wing feathers in the absence of any real wear, while the eagle's breast displays only the expected modest softness at the uppermost relief as the result of a combination of mild wear and an incomplete strike.
