The easily-remembered mintage figure of exactly ten-thousand pieces for 1857-S helps explain the scarcity of pieces in the better collectable grades, as it falls within the era of very low emissions as the series inexorably advanced toward extinction. Numerous rapid hairlines flutter across the surface, but do not inhibit visual appeal in the least, while the presence of lustrous frost remains protected by design elements in low-relief areas. Contrary to what is often seen for this particular issue, there is no surface damage on either side, speaking to strict, honest wear.
