Gold $5-Liberty Head Half Eagle
Cheddars de Voirs Collection. 16 graded AU-53, 29 higher at NGC. In a down year for gold, like 1873, San Francisco struck only 31-thousand half-eagles, accounting for a low number of high-grade survivors. The casually worn surface here shows a few more tiny marks than typical, but ample luster brings the grade near the choice level. Attractive, subtle steely green and khaki-gold predominate.

The error issues include several examples of “gutter folds”, “ink smears”, “printing errors”, “offset prints”, “folded printing errors”, and many more!
