  • Lot #783 - 1916-D Mercury PCGS MS-64FB
  • Hammer: $25,250
  • Dimes-Mercury
  • 107 graded MS-64 FB, 76 higher at PCGS. Without question the most recognized key in the Mercury Dime series, and a "name key" over the entire U.S. compendium, the 1916-D dime requires no introduction to collectors. Like the 1909-S VDB cent, a surprising number of high-grade examples exist because they share the status of "first year of issue" coins, meaning the sheer number saved by contemporary Americans led to some fortuitous circumstances that laid aside a small percentage of mint-state survivors. Exceptionally original copper-grey patina completely endows this contact-free dime and as expected of a specimen that earned a "full bands" designation, both sides feature an incomparably sharp strike.

There appears to be a bit of fascinating history for the certification of this specific 1916-D as well. It was once certified before 2010 in Ex-PCGS blue-label holder 4907.64/06629787, and at some point along the way, that slab garnered a CAC sticker. But the CAC website currently states "This cert# is no longer active and is not included in the current CAC Pop report.". The new PCGS slab (relatively speaking -- it is still blue-label generation) bears SN 25582302, but it has no sticker. Not only does this coin possess outstanding technical merit, but the aqua and sea-green accents on the rim are next to some pleasing ruby-grey peripheral toning that only enhances the charming eye-appeal.
