Gold $5-Liberty Head Half Eagle
Large date, large letters. 1842-D wrangles with 1861-D as a contender for the rarest Dahlonega half-eagle, and a high-grade survivor of any description will be in demand by astute collectors. ANACS claims this AU sharpness example to be cleaned, and indeed, glossy lemon-yellow shows across both sides, accompanied by obvious hairlines in the obverse lower right field. Perhaps as important as anything, the surface actually displays a lot fewer abrasions than typical for a southern mint gold coin.

Ex-Olathe Dollar Hoard from U.S. Treasury Bags. Blatantly original, the upper left half of obverse shows faint yellow-beige hue that deepens significantly toward the lower right. Perhaps remarkable for what it is not, this particularly 1881-S lacks absolute perfection of strike at the exact centers, yet the usual ravishing semi-prooflike luster prevails.
