Patterns-Patterns
Judd-148, R.6, and a very rare annular production by the U.S. mint with a proportionally large opening in the center to permit a larger overall denomination with the proper amount of gold content. The necessarily narrow remaining planchet area permits only limited design elements in addition to the 1852 date as well as USofA and the DOLLAR denomination. An exquisitely original example, this pattern features a remarkably high-relief fin around the central hold, speaking to a powerful strike but simultaneously speaking to one of the technical challenges of striking a holed coin.

At first glance, the quality seems much superior to MS-62, and even careful scrutiny will find only the most trivial abrasions, about the size of flea specks. MS-64 almost seems like a possibility until one discovers light hairlines erratically scattered within the fields, albeit they are clearly toned down by the attractive yellow-gold color. Almost fully struck and showing a nice, sharp "D" mintmark on the reverse.

Lot #309 - Native American Squash Blossom

Circa 1960/1970 and signed by Bobby Thompson of the Navajo nation, this sterling silver (tested, not marked) and turquoise squash blossom necklace features 10 blossoms set between seamed beads and a 5-stone Naja at the bottom. The turquoise cabs are set in a shadow box setting and while most of the background has been blackened nicely, a couple panels need a touch up of color. The turquoise used in the making appears to be from the Sleeping Beauty mine. Condition is very nice for its age with a vintage patina to the metal. Length 30”, 5.54 troy ounces
