Gold $5-Liberty Head Half Eagle
Cheddars de Voirs Collection. 16 graded AU-53, 29 higher at NGC. In a down year for gold, like 1873, San Francisco struck only 31-thousand half-eagles, accounting for a low number of high-grade survivors. The casually worn surface here shows a few more tiny marks than typical, but ample luster brings the grade near the choice level. Attractive, subtle steely green and khaki-gold predominate.

Lot #478 - 1907 Indian No Motto NGC MS-66

Three attempts to create well struck examples of the lovely 1907 "no motto" required the mint to settle upon the normal rims example seen here, but thankfully, all that preceding trial-and-error (i.e. the "wire rim" and "rolled edge" examples) seems to have given Philadelphia plentiful experience in churning out high-quality eagles for circulation. Here is a fabulous example with devastating satin luster and an outstanding strike, not to mention phenomenally attractive yolk-gold hue. Only exceedingly small contact marks can be found on either side. Although 1907 is actually one of the relatively obtainable "no motto" date, the status as first-year-of-series makes it a target for type collectors.

There is a 6.29 ct. oval heat-treated Thai sapphire measuring 11.3x9.97x6.51mm in the center of a flowery halo with a radiating royal blue color that is highlighted perfectly with 11 round brilliant diamonds weighing an estimated 1.20 cttw, VS clarity, I color. The ring is marked 90% on the inside and holds up to the 18K acid test. Ring size 6.5, 5.3 dwt.
