Lot #763 - 1861-O WB-103, Confederate Issue, PCGS MS-61
Half Dollars-Liberty Seated
WB-103. PCGS did not recognize the "bisected date" which might have quickly led to realization that this half-dollar was struck under authority of the Confederacy after the New Orleans mint was seized at the beginning of the Civil War. Although graded only MS-61, both sides exhibit charmingly vibrant luster. Ref: A Register of Liberty Seated Half Dollar Varieties, Bill Bugert.

As usual for double-eagles of the era, mint-state examples are prohibitively rare, placing undue pressure on AU examples. Substantial luster emanates from this beautifully dandelion-yellow tinted coin, with the reverse looking very close to UNC.
