Large Cents-Classic Head
Sheldon-281, no clash marks and thus suggestive of an earlier strike. This Sheldon variety always seems to come a little softly struck yet the headband shows plainly and most definition within the strands of hair are nicely rendered. PCGS states "cleaned" but a more thorough inspection suggests that corrosion has been relieved from the surface, the whole coin later recolored nicely and nearly to the state of an original piece.

1853 is a year replete with a nice variety of type coins, most of them approachable including the 1853 gold dollar. Here is an enchanting example that has all the makings of a gem, but at a much more affordable price given the "plus" grade assessed by PCGS. Opulent, velvety sheen and a delightful strike contribute to visual appeal, the only detriment (that the cataloger could find) being a few trivial hairlines sweeping across the portrait.
