  • Lot #886 - 1826 6 Over 5 SEGS (as described)
  • Hammer: $475
  • Large Cents-Liberty Head
  • Ex-Eliasberg. Newcomb-8, cataloger's grade: AU/surface defects. SEGS indicates a pedigree string of Eliasburg(sp) / B. Max Mehl / William Cutler Atwater and also states "obverse flaw". In addition to the area of roughness at upper left, two small dark scratches at upper right and isolated porosity on the reverse far left are also notable. Despite the relatively small size of the black-and-white photo in the Eliasberg catalog, this coin can be affirmed as lot 563 (May 20-22, 1996). As an early die-state example, the underdigit can be plainly viewed with a loupe, as can relatively beautiful, satiny lustrous surfaces throughout. It is interesting to note that the rarity of N-8 has diminished from R.3 in 1996, to R.2 today.

  • Lot #885 - 1921 Missouri 2X4 NGC MS-66
  • Hammer: $3,400
  • Silver Commemoratives-Silver Commemoratives Half-Dollars
  • 54 graded MS-66, 10 higher at NGC. As the 24th state admitted to the Union, the mint denoted that status on an apparent minority with "2x4" stamped into the obverse left field. And as a result of lower mintage combined with generally mediocre quality for the type, a very-gem example like this is a welcome option over the usual lackluster examples on the market. This coin features superb, original platinum-tan coloration throughout, surrounded by a hint of deeper russet-gold. Fewer than a handful of trivial nicks on the cheek and some brief, faint hairline abrasions across the shoulder appear to be the extant of contact.
