  • Lot #314 - 1856 Upright 5 NGC MS-62
  • Hammer: $625
  • Gold Dollars-Indian Princess Head, Large Head
  • 84 graded MS-62, 61 higher at NGC. The Red Book seemingly underrates how much rarer the "upright 5" is compared to the "slanted 5" sub-type as they appear to be substantially scarcer by comparison. Bag friction in the fields seems to have helped define the grade yet this example features ample pale luster and decent sharpness except for "ERI" on the obverse.

  • Lot #411 - 1878 PCGS AU-53
  • Hammer: $1,300
  • Gold $3-Indian Princess Head
  • 1878 is the most common date in the entire three-dollar gold series according to PCGS. Regardless, this example appears particularly pleasant for the grade. Faintly smoky fields are actually, despite wear, quite even and crisp in appearance.
