  • 1872-CC NGC XF-45
  • Gold $20-Liberty Head Double Eagle
  • Research by Carson City mint expert Rusty Goe suggest a slim population of 1872-CC double eagles survive in PCGS’s and NGC’s certified registry; between 375 and 475 pieces. This was clearly an issue dominated by regional circulation and international bank storage. A comparatively moderate production number of nearly 27 thousand, compared to other CC productions, has yielded the aforementioned survival numbers. If fact, only about a two-dozen 1872-CC Mint State pieces survive in entirety. (CE)

  • Lot #446 - 1892 PCGS PR-63DCAM CAC
  • Hammer: $39,250
  • Gold $10-Liberty Head Eagle
  • Mintage: 72. 3 graded PR-63 DCAM, 4 higher at PCGS. The mintage seems extraordinarily small by today's standards, but it is actually a relatively generous output for the proof series, preceded and superseded by mintages of only 48 and 55 pieces, for comparison's sake. Technical grade gets determined by precisely what one would expect: hairlines fluttering in the fields that are so common to contemporary proof coinage. That said, flashing the coin at just the right angle creates that indelible impression of textured gold on impossibly deep black that makes these such an attraction for modern collectors. As befits such a limited production run, the dies created utterly exacting detail and razor sharp delineation of individual feathers, and absolutely every single strand of Liberty's hair has been sculpted out of the flan with exacting delineation.
