  • US Currency-Obsolete Currency
  • Authorized by an Act of June 9, 1837, this note was part of an emission printed by Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. of Philadelphia and New York. With attractive vignettes of a sailor holding the Texas Navy flag and Justice seated on a wharf, this note was one of the earliest issued and remains in excellent shape despite the tape repairs. This piece bears the desirable amanuensis (secretarial) signature of Sam Houston as President of the Republic and Henry Smith as Treasurer. Earlier, Smith ran against Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin in the 1836 presidential election. He was soundly defeated by Houston, but he did edge out Austin. Elegant design features and favorable condition lend to the immense weight of historical significance behind this note.
