  • 1914-D PCGS MS-64
  • Gold $2.50-Indian Head Quarter Eagle
  • Observing only the obverse might well lead one to expect the gem grade as this side displays marvelous fine matte texture. The reverse takes on the majority of abrasions, showing squiggly shiny lines and a light mark above PLU. An unusually thorough and well delineated strike pushes this particularly 1914-D toward the top of MS-64.

  • M#123, Chihuahua mint. How PCGS is able to come up with such an exacting grade for a crudely cast 8-reales is difficult to ascertain, but suffice it to say the surface shows evidence of a fair amount of circulation. Dies were not available in Chihuahua circa 1810-1813 during the Mexican War of Independence, forcing the mint to resort to casting 8-reales from molds which were themselves produced from struck coins. Because of their similarity to cast counterfeits, each had to be officially counterstamped to ensure acceptance in commerce.
