Gold $20-Liberty Head Double Eagle
Research by Carson City mint expert Rusty Goe suggest a slim population of 1872-CC double eagles survive in PCGS’s and NGC’s certified registry; between 375 and 475 pieces. This was clearly an issue dominated by regional circulation and international bank storage. A comparatively moderate production number of nearly 27 thousand, compared to other CC productions, has yielded the aforementioned survival numbers. If fact, only about a two-dozen 1872-CC Mint State pieces survive in entirety. (CE)

That being said, an extremely elusive, early ANACS photo-certificate accompanies and deserves preservation as much as does the coin itself, as these old certs have virtually disappeared from the marketplace.
