Gold $5-Liberty Head Half Eagle
Large date, large letters. 1842-D wrangles with 1861-D as a contender for the rarest Dahlonega half-eagle, and a high-grade survivor of any description will be in demand by astute collectors. ANACS claims this AU sharpness example to be cleaned, and indeed, glossy lemon-yellow shows across both sides, accompanied by obvious hairlines in the obverse lower right field. Perhaps as important as anything, the surface actually displays a lot fewer abrasions than typical for a southern mint gold coin.

Mastodon Collection. As if it were left in the west Texas desert like one of the cattle skulls depicted, a dry amber brown splotching enwraps the entirety of obverse. Burnished and soft surfaces remain almost immaculate; one sizeable tick lies beneath the “P” of reverse.
