  • Lot #324 - 1842 PCGS XF-40
  • Gold $2.50-Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
  • Mintage: 2823. 10 graded XF-40, 26 higher at PCGS. Charlotte and Dahlonega have earned their reputations for rare emissions, but Philadelphia struck even fewer quarter-eagles in 1842, yet its specimens are actually valued lower than those of either southern mint. Here is an utterly delightful example sporting faintly mustard patina with greyish accents. Softness seen throughout derives from honest wear only, the only contact being a small nick in the reverse right field. Estimates suggest less than 60 examples of 1842 surviving through today.

  • 4 in the date is somewhat weak, while otherwise, both sides display a decent strike. Perhaps a little lackluster throughout, some greyish smears within the obverse fields help limit the grade.
