When is a mule a bison? As you ponder that question, take notice of backplate 322 for this bone-grey note that appears a little undergraded at first glance. The graders may have netted a few points off due to a brief tear that enters the design at far left (not mentioned) as well as "minor glue" mentioned on the holder.

44 graded AU-55, 90 higher at PCGS. Around the middle of the pack in terms of rarity for type-1 double-eagles, the 1855 is reasonably approachable even at the choice grade level. Decent cartwheel effect remains evident on the obverse while the reverse displays even more energy. Enriched with deeper golden hue.
