  • Lot #400 - 1842-D Large Date ANACS AU-53 details/cleaned
  • Hammer: $5,250
  • Gold $5-Liberty Head Half Eagle
  • Large date, large letters. 1842-D wrangles with 1861-D as a contender for the rarest Dahlonega half-eagle, and a high-grade survivor of any description will be in demand by astute collectors. ANACS claims this AU sharpness example to be cleaned, and indeed, glossy lemon-yellow shows across both sides, accompanied by obvious hairlines in the obverse lower right field. Perhaps as important as anything, the surface actually displays a lot fewer abrasions than typical for a southern mint gold coin.

  • Lot #421 - 1835 NGC AU-55
  • Hammer: $1,750
  • Gold $5-Classic Head Half Eagle
  • Robert Michaels Collection. McCloskey 1-A. A partly lustrous example, the coin may qualify as choice at NGC due to a lack of sizable marks and bright canary-gold surfaces. Trivial wear only can be detected on isolated highpoints.
