  • Lot #883 - 1822 UNC details
  • Large Cents-Liberty Head
  • Newcomb-11, and needle-sharp with details reminiscent of a common Randall hoard cent. Indeed, sharpness borders upon cataloger's grade of [UNC/altered surface], wherein oblique lighting angles reveal evidence that the surface was once burnished with exquisite care, lessening the effects of trivial, isolated microporous effects. The surface was subsequently recolored with some success except for remnants of olive-green mixed with overall sienna-brown hues. The ultimate consequence of all this discussion is that no perceptible luster remains, and the cataloger could see an EAC estimate of XF40.

  • Lot #851 - 1859 NGC PR-66
  • Hammer: $4,100
  • Small Cents-Indian Head
  • 18 graded PR-66, 1 graded PR-66 "star", 1 higher at NGC. Debut of the Indian cent in 1859 led to many being saved in mint-state, but for a series as popular as this, both proof and circulation strikes are in heavy demand at all superior grade levels. NGC nailed the grade for this utterly charming, very choice proof example. One cannot help but admire pinpoint accuracy of strike and surface preservation that seems closer to the superb gem level than not. Obverse fields are only slightly flashy against overall ultra-fine matte texture while the mirrors are by contrast a little more pronounced on the reverse.
