  • Common even up through better AU grades, collectors know that the population of the Philadelphia 1901 dollar collapses dramatically at or above MS-60. The present example may have passed as UNC in years before certification because active mint luster traverses through the fields with almost no interruption -- showing only the lightest rub within the most open areas. Admittedly, highpoint details, including over the ear and on the eagle's breast, also show finger friction, affirming the correctly assigned near-mint status.
