Rich burgundy overtakes the entire surface and apparently manages to retain just enough copper hue to warrant a full "RD" designation. Faint copper spotting of the obverse may be limiting the grade while on balance, fairly well defined features help elevate the appeal. Ideal brick-orange luster on the reverse.

Morals And Liberty Collection. Kagin-3 (R.6). Formed in New York City, the firm of Norris, Gregg & Norris moved west to San Francisco following the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill. They struck a five-dollar coin in Benicia City, a suburb of San Francisco, and these very rare coins are avidly sought by collectors today. NGC grades this reddish-gold five as MS-61, likely reflecting in part a rather weak strike as well as delicately hairlined fields.
