  • Lot #400 - 1842-D Large Date ANACS AU-53 details/cleaned
  • Gold $5-Liberty Head Half Eagle
  • Large date, large letters. 1842-D wrangles with 1861-D as a contender for the rarest Dahlonega half-eagle, and a high-grade survivor of any description will be in demand by astute collectors. ANACS claims this AU sharpness example to be cleaned, and indeed, glossy lemon-yellow shows across both sides, accompanied by obvious hairlines in the obverse lower right field. Perhaps as important as anything, the surface actually displays a lot fewer abrasions than typical for a southern mint gold coin.

  • Lot #410 - 1872 NGC AU-58
  • Hammer: $5,500
  • Gold $3-Indian Princess Head
  • Scott Laiter Collection. Mintage: 2000. 74 graded AU-58, 42 higher at NGC. Undoubtedly UNC in the days before certification, the fields radiate pleasing semi-flashy luster and ample, original carrot-orange hue that speaks to excellent preservation. Well struck details seem unperturbed by wear, the grade accounted for by finger friction affecting either side consistently and about equally. An utterly delightful example.
