  • Lot #509 - 1873-CC NGC XF-45 (no line)
  • Gold $20-Liberty Head Double Eagle
  • Cheddars de Voirs Collection. Mintage: 22,410. Surprisingly strong luster remains prevalent on both sides, cheerfully illuminating bright dandelion-yellow and golden orange hues. The reverse plainly has claims to at least AU-50 all by itself. Typical abrasions scatter widely across either side, joined by a few bolder marks left of Liberty's mouth and flung right of the hair knot. Housed in a much older no-line holder, one can have confidence that this appealing, vibrant coin has remained unaltered for at least a few decades.

  • Lot #458 - 1839 Large Letters, Head of 1838 NGC AU-55
  • Hammer: $7,500
  • Gold $10-Capped Bust to Right Eagle
  • Mintage: 25,801 for a variety appropriately known as the "old portrait" obverse. The design compared side by side with that of latter years is distinctly different and leaner by comparison. The right edge of "9" in the date shows recutting sometimes mistaken as 98, and the portrait has a swirl of hair laying across the ear, rather than above it.

An untroubled example with minimal luster, the surface exhibits mostly mustard-yellow accents over pale golden color typical of the era. While rather well struck overall, five points of wear, likely joined by limits of then-current technology kept away perfect delineation of the wavy hair at the top of the portrait. The eagle's feathers are individually sculpted, however. The coin overall shows only expectant small abrasions -- not a single major mark requires separate mention.
