  • Lot #870 - 1799 PCGS G-4
  • Large Cents-Draped Bust
  • Elm Then Almond Collection. Sheldon-189, a famously near-impossible key date to get straight-graded at any major grading service. Contrary to many low-grade pieces that have either a weak date or LIBERTY, this example features a nicely bold date, and LIBERTY has partial weakness only at the upper third of each letter. The coin was struck off of early dies, showing a small die chip between "E" of ONE and "T" of CENT -- a worthy diagnostic as to authenticity. An amazingly nice surface for the grade given the utter lack of environmental effects aside from normal circulation.

  • Deeply struck devices and surfaces free from impairment are among the many reasons why this foursome of 1882-S Morgan silver dollars have been graded as MS-66 by NGC and PCGS. Three of these are NGC certified and one is certified by PCGS. One of the NGC examples displays a swatch of russet toning in the eastern portions of the obverse fields. Otherwise, the rest of the surfaces fall into the bright and white category (ck).
