There are nine examples of this short-lived series in this group lot that includes the following: an 1876 (AU details, cleaned), 4x 1877 (XF), 3x 1877-S (XF details, cleaned), and an 1878-S (F). A fully brown color designation might seem more appropriate to many viewers as only about 15% or so of the vintage mint red remains, but one cannot know whether the coin mellowed while stored within the slab. At any rate from a technical preservation standpoint, this one rises above many, if not most Hawaii cents given freedom from the corrosion that frequently visits these rare and desirable pieces. Well struck throughout and a coin that would be a welcome addition to any astute collection.
