Gold $5-Liberty Head Half Eagle
More available than the "large date" logotype but still hardly common given the mintage of under 60-thousand pieces. The pale, lackluster surface displays a thin coating of haze that helps subdue any potential remaining luster. Strike quality seems to be about as nice as is ever seen for 1842-D.

A blast white coin when presented in light, a striking iron grey swiftly dominates the eye when shadowed. Know for perhaps being a ½ point more lenient on the grading scale than PCGS, one could have expected at least a “plus” designation from NGC in this instance.
