Benjamin J. Collection. VAM-3, popular for both a doubled-die obverse and reverse. Nothing impairs the vivid luster of this obviously-choice example, although frosted areas receive some bag abrasions on the cheek and potentially slidemarks on the neck. A rather amazingly well-preserved reverse actually looks MS-66(!), elevating overall appeal of this well-liked semi-key date.

38 graded MS-66, 6 higher at NGC. Both sides have been handsomely well taken care of for this very gem cent, struck on the doorstep of the Civil War. Impeccable color takes on flashing yellowish accents under some lighting angles and a good loupe reveals a stone-cold four-diamond strike despite a small die crack at 8:00 on the reverse.
