  • Lot #896 - 1856 Flying Eagle NGC PR-45
  • Small Cents-Flying Eagle
  • Snow-5, identifiable right away by noting a point on the bottom of "U" in UNITED, and a tiny dot inside the upper left serif of "N" in CENT. A sensational-for-the-grade Flying eagle cent garners the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice Award almost by virtue of pristine surface quality alone, with smooth placid fields surrounding beautifully high relief design elements. Deep, dusky olive-brown color could not possibly be more ideal for a lightly worn 1856, yet circulation was kind, imparting absolutely no distracting marks or spots. One ancient, faint hairline descends from "M' in AMERICA but blends completely into the surface.

  • Clem Stevens Collection. VAM-5A, and as usual, being able to narrow down the VAM assures authenticity, aside from the obvious fact that NGC has certified this crucial key date silver dollar. Despite not garnering a mint-state grade, it truly appears the texture within the fields is unbroken by friction or circulation marks, but not so on the cheek where faint rub lingers. In addition, a small number of circulation marks also pepper the cheek. While not the most valuable Morgan dollar, this is a well struck example of one of the most popular dates.
