Lot #395 - 1834 Classic, Plain 4 PCGS AU-55
Gold $5-Classic Head Half Eagle
McCloskey 4-C (R.4), block 8, plain 4, second head. 1834 marked the year when the mint changed design for the half-eagle, as the intrinsic value of each coin made it profitable (over face value) to melt them down for bullion. 4-C can most quickly be attributed by noticing a die crack that ejects from the top of Liberty's modified portrait. Noticeable flowline texture nearly touching the rims speaks also to later dies.

Pleasing album tone swirls aqua-orange around the periphery, more strongly on the obverse than the reverse. A properly struck coin, the reverse does show evidence of a nice die clash.
